UGA Creative Teaching Award

Moon Jung Jang and David T Gay win UGA Creative Teaching Award

Congratulations to Moon Jung Jang (Art) and David T Gay (Math), recipients of a UGA Creative Teaching Award for their innovative work in design and mathematics! For more about the awards visit:

Jang and Gay began their collaboration with the support of Ideas for Creative Exploration, producing a workshop called “Unsolved: Math+Design” and a Math Outreach Design Lab and exhibition. Jang shared that the workshop and course are “two of the happiest and the most rewarding moments in my teaching career.” Gay reflected on “the essential role played by Ideas for Creative Exploration” in “bringing people together to find unexpected and amazing connections.”

Earth Day 2020 (Art) Challenge

April 22, 2020 is the 50th anniversary of Earth Day.

UGA Office of Sustainability invites you to share through art how you are connecting with and appreciating the earth, people, or other living creatures during this time of uncertainty, and how this can inspire an even better future.

Any form of expression is accepted; music, dance, poetry, essay, video, other forms of visual art, etc. in three categories:

Appreciation: convey a sense of personal connection with and appreciation for the earth, people, or other living creatures.

Awareness: illuminate a current issue affecting the health and wellbeing of the earth, people, or other living creatures.

Action: conduct or inspire meaningful action to protect the earth, people, or other living creatures.

Any member of the UGA or Athens area community is eligible to submit up to three art works. Entries must be able to be experienced online and in social media. Publication and prizes awarded to selected works from each category, including memberships to Bulldog Bike Share, Collective Harvest, and Awesome Possum Curbside Compost!

Works must be completed while following appropriate social and physical distancing in adherence to advice and requirements of both the University System of Georgia and the Centers for Disease Control.

Co-sponsors: Athens Area Arts Council, Flagpole Magazine, Center for Integrative Conservation Research, Georgia Museum of Art, Ideas for Creative Exploration, Odum School of Ecology, Sustainability Certificate Program, and the Willson Center for Humanities and Arts.

Shelter Projects

Athens, GA Shelter Projects: Micro-Fellowships in the Arts and Humanities

The Willson Center invites proposals for Shelter Projects, a micro-fellowship program to support graduate students and community-based artists and practitioners in the creation of shareable reflections on their experience of the current pandemic through the arts and humanities.

The Shelter Projects program is a partnership of the Graduate School, the UGA Arts Council, the Franklin College of Arts and Sciences, Flagpole magazine, and the Willson Center through the Office of Research. Applications will be open on a rolling basis, with $500 micro-fellowships offered as funding allows.

The projects must be carried out individually, in self-isolation and adhering to the advice and requirements of both the University System of Georgia and the Centers for Disease Control.

Creativity, Collaboration, and Environmental Problem Framing

Are you a graduate student in an Arts or STEM discipline with an interest in environmental issues and interdisciplinary engagement? This workshop series is just for you!

If you are interested in participating in future workshop offerings, please complete this brief survey:

Workshops will feature creative activities including writing, collage, movement, and group problem-solving. Participants should be full-time graduate students.

All applicants to the Arts+STEM Workshop series are eligible and invited to participate in a National Science Foundation sponsored research study that will evaluate the workshop activities, and how they may contribute to creative inquiry and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Dr. Lizzie King is an Associate Professor with a joint appointment in the Odum School of Ecology and Warnell School of Forestry and Natural Resources. She earned a BA from Reed College and a master’s degree and Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis. King conducts research in three main areas of sustainability science. One area focuses on challenges faced by livestock-herding societies in rural Africa, combining ecology and social science to gain a more holistic view of livelihood vulnerability. The second area is restoration ecology in Georgia, including barrier islands of Georgia’s coast and urban forests in Athens. Thirdly, she studies the value and practices of interdisciplinary and academic/non-academic partnerships in sustainability research.

Mark Callahan is the Artistic Director of Ideas for Creative Exploration, an interdisciplinary initiative for advanced research in the arts at UGA, and serves on the faculty of the Lamar Dodd School of Art. He is a graduate of Cranbrook Academy of Art and Rhode Island School of Design, where he was a member of the European Honors Program in Rome, Italy. He currently serves on the editorial board of Ground Works, a new journal for arts research in partnership with the Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru). Callahan has assisted many collaborative project teams at UGA and facilitated interdisciplinary workshops for a diversity of students and faculty interested in sustainability and environmental issues.

Both facilitators are CICR Affiliates and co-principal investigators of “Enhancing imaginative and collaborative STEM capacity through creative inquiry,” a three-year project supported by the National Science Foundation.


This workshops series was developed by the UGA Center for Integrative Conservation Research in collaboration with Ideas for Creative Exploration. Based on student feedback and the success of a pilot program sponsored by the Graduate School, an interdisciplinary team of researchers from the arts, humanities, and sciences designed activities to train students to think creatively, to collaborate across disciplines, and to work with people with different perspectives, knowledge, and values.

Further support comes from a three-year NSF Innovations in Graduate Education award to study the effectiveness of the workshops and to generate the knowledge required to move these approaches into the broader community. If successful, widespread adoption of these methods will contribute to equipping graduates across the country with communication and collaboration skills and ultimately increase creative and innovative solutions to complex global environmental challenges.

Call for Submissions: a2ru Ground Works
Priority date for submissions is February 28, 2020

The Alliance for the Arts in Research Universities (a2ru) issues a call for submissions to its online peer-reviewed collection of interdisciplinary arts projects, Ground Works.

We welcome submissions that integrate research and practice in the fine, performing, and applied arts and design with other disciplines. We seek a wide range of interdisciplinary works that pose a challenge to traditional peer review methods by inviting examination from multiple disciplinary perspectives. Eligible projects have achieved some initial recognition; they may be collaborative or sole-author, but should demonstrably advance multiple fields within and beyond the arts.
